Chester will face former coach in consolation finals

The Chester Yellow Jackets will face former head coach Mark Riley Saturday in the consolation final of the 48th annual Chester Invitational Tournament.

Elverado varsity assistant coach and JV coach Mark Riley coached the Yellow Jackets last year before the school district released him because of a reduction in staff.

In the consolation semifinals Friday night in Daniel Colbert Memorial Gym, Elverado surprised fifth-seed Valley Park, MO 55-43 while Chester took care of Dongola in the nightcap 47-27.

In the first game Friday night, the Elverado Falcons snapped a long losing streak by beating the Valley Park, Hawks 55-43.

The Falcons led 13-10 after the first quarter but Valley Park outscored Elverado 12-9 in the second to send the game to the locker room at halftime tied at 22-22.

Each team scored 13 points in the third quarter, sending the game tied at 36-36 to a wild fourth quarter finish.

In the final eight minutes, Elverado's Jake Lipe was hit was a double-technical and ejected from the game after he and a Valley Park player exchanged words following a shot block.  Lipe had to be restrained by his teammates before he was hit with a second technical and tossed out of the game.

The ejection of Lipe seemed to fire up his teammates as Elverado took control from that point on.  The Falcons outscored the Hawks 19-7 in the fourth quarter to win the game 55-43.

Kyle Kempfer led Elverado with a game high 24 points.  Landry Arnett finished with seven while Dalton Porter and Jake Lipe each had six points.

Valley Park, MO was paced by Ben Herbst's 16 points. Josh Ramsey finished with 12.

In the nightcap, the Chester Yellow Jackets snapped a three-game losing skid with a 47-27 win over the Dongola Demons.

Chester jumped out to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter thanks to Zach Lochhead's 13 points.  The Yellow Jackets held a 26-12 lead at intermission after outscoring Dongola 9-8 in the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets led 36-15 heading to the fourth after outscoring the Demons 10-3.

Lochhead finished with a game high 26 points leading Chester.  MJ Hamilton finished with eight while Matt Heberlie and Carlo Marconi each had four.

Chris Cohin led Dongola with 10 points while Darin Gibson finished with seven.
